Q CELLS invested a further €15.5 million in its global R&D headquarters in Thalheim, Germany, on top of last years €20 million pledge for machinery and equipment. This latest round of investment is aimed at accelerating the development of next-generation solar module technology, and has been channelled into the procurement of specialist equipment for R&D efforts in n-type cell and module development. Hanwha Q CELLS team of experienced scientists has identified this technology as the most effective next-generation driver of LCOE (levelized cost of electricity) reduction in PV in the coming years.
n-type technology—also known as Q.ANTUM NEO—is the next step in Q CELLS unique Q.ANTUM Technology roadmap, utilizing n-type cells with passivating contacts to further increase the efficiency and power of the solar modules. Q CELLS expects to introduce Q.TRON, a new solar module manufactured using this cell technology by 2021, boosting efficiencies well above the levels of current p-type modules on the market. At the same time, its R&D department is conducting research on tandem solar cell development based on perovskite technology.
Combined with an annual R&D expenditure of around €35 million, investments towards the global R&D headquarters will total over €140 million by 2023.
